What’s the Hold Up?

“What is this person… asleep at the wheel?!”, I mumble to myself, mindfully eyeing the church bumper sticker on my back window. I alternate between passive-aggressively inching towards their taillights and cautiously drifting back in the name of what I tell myself is grace. Not soon enough, the driver slows even more and I’m happy to make the decision to finally move into the next lane. As I’m joyfully passing by, I see the car in front of them was the culprit all this time. Guilt sets in a bit regarding my mumblings toward the innocent driver. Keep cruising past. Don’t make eye contact.

I began to see a deeper issue here, on my part. If I’m honest, oftentimes I blame the person that I can see, the one that’s not reacting the way I’d like them to. Or perhaps I assume they are what’s standing in my way of growth, of breakthrough, of freedom, of peace. I get my heart broken, my feelings hurt, and wallow in rejection. All in vain. There are simply paths that aren’t meant for me. And out of his grace and mercy, he will hold up any line he desires to redirect his children. “He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake.” (Psalms‬ ‭23:3‬ ‭NKJV‬‬)

Sometimes what I can’t see is that God is the one governing the situation at a speed that is completely perfect according to his plan. He is the one wise enough to hold things up or block my way when he knows I’m headed in the wrong direction. I forget that God is in control and I’m responsible to keep my eyes on my own vessel at my own speed. “And the LORD, He is the One who goes before you. He will be with you, He will not leave you nor forsake you; do not fear nor be dismayed.”” (Deuteronomy‬ ‭31:8‬ ‭NKJV)

In what situation do you need to let God have the driver’s seat again, and obediently back off the gas?

Thanks for sharing this inspiring article. It made me think of an encounter that the two of us had one morning. And I thought about the church sticker on the rear window, which made me realize you were someone trying to get my attention in order to speak.
